Resetting this July

Starting Anew in the Summer

So wow, here we are in July – halfway through the calendar year for most, and at the end of the school year for students and parents. As I fall in the latter category, it feels a bit like the year is over and so I'm taking this time to reset the business. If you read my email two weeks ago, you'll see that leading up to this "reset" time, I launched my new rebrand including shiny new website.

Like a lot of service-based small businesses and freelancers at the moment, I've been slower than usual for the past 6 weeks. I've definitely had client work but the majority of my time recently has been working on my own brand and business (something I generally back-burner all year long). I've been looking at it from all angles in this reset time: sales, marketing, design, finances, efficiencies, INefficiencies, all of it.

This nicely aligns with the fact that it's summertime, as I wouldn't be so calm about this if it was UK wintertime and dark and dismal (though I am typing this while wearing jeans in July!). I am trying to embrace and appreciate that I'm able to do this all now. A friend of mine is in TV production and she's been out of work since March and has taken to painting while she looks for a new gig (it's also slow out there in TV freelance world!); I told her how lucky she is to have so much natural summer light to do all this painting. I'm reminding myself of the same – everything glows beautifully in the summer months. You can look at your business in a better light when you have the actual time to do it. And don't feel it's being rushed and just a tickbox exercise.

What about you? Do you look at July/the Summer as a reset? Or are you more of a traditionalist and January is your time? Let me know!

Have a lovely rest of your summer, I should be back in your inbox before the end of August!
